Katrina Guettler: the beauty maker 2013
Acrylic bra/underwear form, recycled materials: beach glass, wrapping paper, aluminum wire, paint, feathers, plastic, glass beads.
As an artist, I am constantly inspired by other cultures, how people depict beauty, or share messages, or use materials. All of these factors reflect the spirit of a people, but in particular, of the artist’s interpretation of her world.
I created The Beauty Maker as a manifestation of my vision of the universal woman artist. I like using recycled materials as much as possible because I think many women do this same thing as part of daily life, whether it is making a meal or sewing a garment; they creatively use what they have.
The spiraling wire chakra inside the figure indicates the many ways women around the world “center” themselves spiritually, in order to create. The swirling butterflies represent all of the beautiful things we, as artists/creators/women/mothers put forth in the world. I used the acrylic form to reveal most importantly that, who we are as individual women, can only be determined by the person we are inside. The outside is merely a shell. The beach glass “water” represents the fluidity of creativity around the world, our connectedness like the ocean, free without solid borders or definition. The colored heart shows beauty at the very core. It is my belief that only beauty can be created if beauty is contained within.
